What is a Safety-focused SRTS Report?

The Safety-focused SRTS Report is a short travel plan to address Engineering and Education needs for students walking and bicycling to school.  With strong support from the school district or local government in which the school is located, the Safety-focused SRTS Report identifies specific things to address along the walking and bicycling routes kids take to school.  The Safety-focused SRTS Report is aimed at taking action in the short term by implementing changes to the pedestrian infrastructure that have immediate safety benefits and teaching pedestrian safety to students who walk to school. This type of assistance is for schools where many students are already walking, but there are significant safety concerns and it is unlikely that a school SRTS team will be formed.

What types of needs and concerns are usually included in a Safety-focused SRTS Report?

The report identifies and finds fixes for walking and bicycling conditions that create safety issues for kids walking to school.  For example, a missing sidewalk or a narrow shoulder that is in poor condition maybe identified.  It can also find places where improvements are needed to places where students cross the street to get to school, such as striping a crosswalk, adding signage, or a median refuge island.
